Nacht

After a format past, Mermails are no longer a stranger to anyone in both the OCG and TCG. While the March list is certainly approaching day by day, the strength and influence of Mermails has yet to see a decline. Instead of players chucking away these water bastards many are in fact picking them up believing that the coming list will treat Mermails lenient enough to allow it to continue as a viable option (how true is that depends on time itself.) It is no surprise with both the OCG and TCG receiving seemingly more powerful arsenals to cope with the change. There is no need for introductions when it comes to the infamous Armor Kappa (OCG) and new abyss God Mermail Abyssteus (TCG) promising new heights, perhaps depths, in this already popular (successful) deck.

Meet an old friend, Skull Meister. A growing trend in Japan. Coming to case with Dimensional Fissure and Macro Cosmos as the ultimate oppressors of Mermails (throw in Soul Drain), some decks just cannot fit it in and take control as much as they like. Yes, it is easy to argue that Dimensional Fissure allows Exceed materials to stay in the Graveyard making it the absolute choice over Macro due to flexibility, truth is when shit hits the fan those cards immediately says “I told you so!” in your face. What about Soul Drain? Honestly, I do not know why it falls under in comparison to the popular duo (perhaps we all know eliminating the threat for good is the best to ensure no future harm can be done?) So, what about Skull Meister? It’s a hand trap, a Level 4, a DARK, and it comes with a reliable 1700 ATK. With those stats in line, it is already obvious Skull Meister actually opens up more option to decks that cannot effectively manipulate the famous duo.

Smacked into Verz it becomes a hand trap, a desperate beater, and another means to go into Rank 4. Inside Wind-Ups, the same thing shows (Fire Fist says the same thing.) The same points can be said to a lot of other decks out there but the key component here is it being harder to be stopped (if you run into Debunk I don’t know what to say) and the Meister hardly screws up a majority of decks’ primary functionality. Let's face it, sometimes the sacrifice we make for Fissure and Macro is just too much. Put it in Chaos Dragons, it becomes a Chaos play fodder. Maybe it’ll work in Hieratics as well? Talking about Chaos, Effect Veiler is already a staple and being a LIGHT what if Skull Meister accompanies that pesky spellcaster? Everybody’s best friend becomes important again (at one point depending on deck space.) Apart from all the Mermail hate, Skull Meister keeps Dark Worlds at bay to a certain degree. Agree to disagree? Leave your comments below. Thank you for spending time here!

  1. Skull meister is pretty solid, but it has 1 key downside -- you have to activate it directly in response to the effect it is negating. This means that if they drop the atlanteans off of any of the level 7s, you won't be able to stop them with Skull Meister, something soul drain would.

    1. Yeah, that is one thing about Skull Meister. Exactly why i don't understand why many insist on going the Macro Fissure road instead of using Soul Drain given the fact that all three dies horribly to back row hate (Macro to Warning.)

  2. Oh god I completely forgot about this card!

Is it finally Skull Meister's time to shine?

    1. Seems so. It works against Fire Kings as well. Same could be said for D.D Crow.
